Bust Half Dollar Links - Flowing Hair - Draped

Early United States Half Dollars When you get tired of just filling holes in your coin albums and building sets of modern coins, consider collecting bust half dollars. Many of these big beautiful silver coins from the early 1800's are still available today and are very reasonably priced for a coin of their age. Bust half dollars were produced at the first mint of the United States. Each die, obverse and reverse, that were used to produce these coins, were hand cut and had minor differences and imperfections that tell us something about the history of our country in its early days. These small differences did not mean anything at the time, but today they are the basis of collecting bust half dollars by varieties. If you haven't had a bust half dollar in your hands recently, you might consider picking one up and looking at it. You might decide at that time to start collecting them yourself. A year set of capped bust halves from 1807-1836 is still an affordable set to build. The 1815 is the only key date that is expensive. The overdates are also some of the most interesting pieces in the set.
