South Dakota

Coin and Stamp Association

The South Dakota Coin and Stamp Association was founded in 1951 and officially organized the following year.  The Association is registered as a nonprofit corporation with the South Dakota Secretary of State as an organization of people who collect numismatic and philatelic items (coins, stamps, tokens, postal artifacts, postcards, covers, and related items) or those who study the history surrounding these items.  Residency within South Dakota is not a prerequisite for becoming a member.

Government

The Association is governed by Officers, consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, President Ex-Officio, and five Directors.  The officers are determined according to Article II the Bylaws of the Association.  A list of current Officers can be found here.

Membership

Membership is determined according to Article I of the Bylaws of the Association.  Anyone of good character is suitable for membership in one of several categories.  Technically, you must be recommended for membership by a current member, but the Secretary-Treasurer will fulfill this requirement pro-forma for any interested party, subject to investigation.  Memberships come in four types: Regular Members, Regular Members for Life, Junior Members, and Club Members.  More detailed membership information and a membership application can be found here.

Meetings

Presently the Association has no regular membership meetings.  The annual membership meeting is held at the annual convention following the banquet.  Board of Directors meetings are held periodically throughout the year at times and places to be announced.  All members are welcome to attend the board meetings.  Anyone not able to attend may send proposed agenda items to the Secretary-Treasurer.

Convention

The annual convention is held in the spring of the year at a place decided upon by the board of directors.  The convention may be hosted by a local club or by any group of Members of the Association.  The convention program includes:

Annual Bourse  This is an assembly of coin and stamp dealers who have paid table rent to have a location to buy, sell, or trade in the exhibition hall.  Their individual businesses are not connected in any way to the SDC&SA.  The bourse floor is open to the public for both days of the show.

Competitive Exhibits  Members of the Association are encouraged to arrange their collections into displays that will educate and entertain the public.  These exhibits are judged by judges chosen by the Board of Directors and awards are presented at the banquet.

Special Meetings or Classes  Groups of collectors with similar interests may meet at the convention to discuss their specialty or hold a club meeting.  Some collectors or researchers may also present lectures.

Banquet and Annual Meeting  On Saturday evening the attendees at the convention are welcome to attend the banquet, you need not be a member to attend.  Tickets may be purchased at the registration table.  Following a nice meal, the business of the Association is open for discussion and voting under the direction of the current President.  Among the items on the agenda are the awarding of exhibit trophies, the election of new officers, and discussion of plans for future conventions. Only Regular Members present at the meeting are allowed to vote.

Public Auction  The auction is held immediately following the Annual Meeting on Saturday night.  It is open to the public without charge or obligation.  A lot listing will be available at the convention registration table or at the auction registration table.  Lots will be available for pre-auction viewing all day Saturday.  The auction is strictly cash-and-carry.

Newsletter

All members of the SDC&SA receive the newsletter four times per year; usually in January, April, July, and October.  Members are encouraged to write articles about items of interest to the membership.  In the future, selected articles will be posted to this site.  Advertising space is available within the publication.  The newsletter is currently edited by the Secretary of the Association and all correspondence should be sent to the contact address or e-mail at the bottom of this page.
